Board Member Position: Fundraising/Development Director

Mission/Vision: 

The Town Project is dedicated to creating a just and equitable society through the pursuit of social and restorative justice. We strive to empower marginalized communities, foster inclusivity, and advocate for systemic change. By promoting education, awareness, and dialogue, we aim to challenge oppressive systems, address inequities, and restore balance in our society. Our mission is to inspire compassion, promote reconciliation, and create opportunities for healing and transformation, ultimately paving the way for a more harmonious and equitable world. In order to accomplish this bold mission, we offer restorative justice training and conflict mediation services to schools and educational institutions. We are also in the process of developing community arts programming and a restorative justice facilitator internship program for young adults from 18 to 24 who are looking to develop their skills and gain more experience.

Position Description:

The Town Project is seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to join our Board of Directors as the Fundraising and Development Director. This volunteer position plays a critical role in supporting the financial sustainability and growth of our start up organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in fundraising, donor cultivation, and development strategies, as well as a deep commitment to our mission of social and restorative justice.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies to secure financial support for The Town Project’s programs and initiatives.
  • Cultivate relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and other potential funding sources.
  • Lead efforts to identify and pursue grant opportunities, including researching grant prospects, preparing grant proposals, and managing grant reporting requirements.
  • Organize and coordinate fundraising events, campaigns, and appeals to engage donors and raise awareness of our mission.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and executive leadership team to establish annual fundraising goals and monitor progress towards targets.
  • Serve as an ambassador for The Town Project, effectively communicating our mission, impact, and funding needs to external stakeholders.
  • Participate in regular board meetings, providing updates on fundraising activities and contributing to strategic planning discussions.
  • Stay informed about trends and best practices in nonprofit fundraising and development, and make recommendations for continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in nonprofit fundraising, development, or philanthropy.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and effectively engage donors and supporters.
  • Excellent organizational and project management abilities, with the capacity to plan and execute fundraising initiatives.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and community empowerment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and contribute to a positive and inclusive organizational culture.
  • Availability to attend monthly board meetings and actively participate in board committees and activities
  • Familiarity with restorative justice principles and practices (preferred but not required)
  • Board of Directors experience (preferred but not required)

Time Commitment: Approximately 5-10 hours per month, including board meetings, committee work, and fundraising activities.

Location: Remote/virtual; occasional in-person meetings in Oakland, CA.
